Training
Training is a very important part of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation Police Department. The officers of the department are bound by certain training requirements set forth by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the Arizona Peace Officer’s Standards and Training Board (AZPOST). Each officer must comply with these requirements to retain their Police Officer certification.
The BIA requires each officer to attend a minimum of 40 hours of training every year. AZPOST requires each officer to attend 8 hours of classroom training each year and 8 hours of proficiency training every 3 years.
The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation Police Department requires each officer to attend “Use of Force” training, use of less lethal equipment Oleoresin Capsicum Spray Baton, Pepper Ball System, Taser and Control and Restraint Defensive Tactics firearms officers train and must qualify with a handgun in daylight and nighttime.
Officers also shoot and qualify with a department shotgun and patrol rifle officers must pass a judgmental shooting course known as FATS.
Officers have been trained and continue to receive training in a variety of areas. Some areas include: Indian Country Jurisdiction, Law and Legal Issues, Interview and Interrogation Techniques, Drugs, Gangs, Domestic Violence Issues and more. In calendar year 2010 employees attended 2235 hours of training.
